The Chair in Political Philosophy and the University of Zurich Competence Center for Human Rights (UZHR) gladly invite you to participate in The Centre for Ethics’ 3rd Event on Impact Investing - Entrepreneurship and Social Return. A Case for Mainstreaming? at University of Zurich, 5th of December 2013 (room: KO2 F 152, time: 17.00-20.00).
Modern economic theory is predicated on the assumption of profit-maximizing firms interacting in competitive markets. How does balancing profit and social return fit into that picture? Ever since the 1970s ,social entrepreneurship’ sometimes also called ,social business’ has come into being. The businesses that operate under this label aspire to create both profit and positive social return. However, there are traditional corporations that also claim to produce a respectable amount of social return that goes along with their profitable operations. How different are social entrepreneurs from traditional firms? Are Social Entrepreneurs a special phenomenon in the private sector or is social entrepreneurship solely a label? Is there a shift in how traditional firms conceive/understand profit nowadays? Is there a way to mainstream the concept of social entrepreneurship in the private sector? What might be obstacles for mainstreaming this way of doing business? These and further questions shall be discussed at this event and we look forward to a rich exchange of viewpoints and experiences.
