International Workshop on Human Dignity, Human Rights and Bioethics on 5-6 November 2009

This Workshop aims to explore the role that the notion of human dignity plays in bioethics, and the intricate interaction between dignity and human rights in the emerging field of biolaw. Recent domestic laws and international instruments relating to bioethics put a strong emphasis on the notion of human dignity. However, they do neither provide any definition or clear justification of this concept, nor indicate the concrete situations to which it can be applied. This raises the question whether human dignity is a mere rhetorical notion, or whether its use reflects a real concern for preventing harm to people in the biomedical field. This Workshop intends to provide a forum to discuss in depth possible answers to these challenging questions.

Organized by the University Research Priority Program in Ethics of the University of Zurich (UFSP Ethik), in collaboration with the Institute of Biomedical Ethics of the University of Zurich and the International Association Law, Ethics and Science (IALES), Paris
